The revision of ISO 9001:2026 has progressed further. Following the Draft International Standard (DIS), the standard is now in the final approval phase, or FDIS stage.
According to the current status, publication of the new ISO 9001 is expected in autumn 2026. The basic structure remains familiar, but key topics are being defined more precisely and adapted to modern framework conditions.
In future, organisations are expected to examine more clearly which external and internal issues influence their environment, processes and strategic direction. These may include technological developments, climate change and relevant environmental conditions.
If these aspects are assessed as relevant, they should be taken into account in a traceable manner in the context analysis, risks and opportunities, and management review.
The requirements for addressing risks and opportunities are being more clearly differentiated. This makes it clearer that opportunities should not merely be understood as a counterbalance to risks, but can be actively identified, assessed and used.
This strengthens the preventive and strategic character of the management system.
The revision places greater emphasis on the reality of modern forms of work and information. Quality management must function effectively even when information is provided digitally, processes are managed in a hybrid manner, or QMSs are mapped using cloud-based solutions.
For companies, this brings the question into focus of whether documented information remains available, traceable, protected and suitable for use. Organisations using digital QMSs, collaboration tools or cloud-based solutions should review the control and protection of this information at an early stage.
Another important point is the stronger alignment with the current Harmonized Structure for management system standards. For companies with integrated management systems, this can improve compatibility with other standards and facilitate the integration of quality, environmental, energy, occupational health and safety, or information security management.
ISO 9001:2026 is not expected to be a revolution, but rather a targeted further development: with a clearer structure, more precise wording and a stronger focus on environmental conditions, opportunities, digital forms of work and the strategic effectiveness of quality management systems.
TopQM-Systems supports companies in preparing existing management systems specifically for ISO 9001:2026 – in a practical, structured way and tailored to the existing organisation.
This includes, among other things:
• Revision monitoring for ISO 9001:2026
• Gap analyses ISO 9001:2015 vs. ISO 9001:2026
• Evaluation of existing processes and documented information
• Adaptation of management system documentation and process landscapes
• Training for auditors, managers and process owners
• Integration of new requirements into existing IMS structures
This turns the revision from a short-term implementation pressure into a structured opportunity to further develop your quality management system.
